DIY: Almond Butter

by Matt on December 13, 2012

Patience, patience, patience…

The key to making your own nut butter. Trust me, you’re gonna need it!

I had some free time last night, so my little project involved patience, almonds, and a processor. My pantry was in the middle of a crisis. There was knot three jars of nut butter on the shelves!

I don’t normally make my own nut butter because I’m not a very patient person. It’s easier for me to just pick up a jar at the store. However, making your own is a great way to control the quality of ingredients in the finished product. These days, you never know what goes into your food, no matter what they claim on the label. The only way to really know is to…

Make your own!

Homemade Almond Butter

Ingredients

  • 2 cups raw almonds

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 F.
  2. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper and spread the almonds in a single layer on top.
  3. Roast the almonds for 10-15 minutes, turning every 5 minutes or so.
  4. Blend in a high-powered blender or food processor for 10-15 minutes.
  5. Just keep processing. It will take awhile, but it just takes time.

Do you make your own nut butter?

I make my own peanut and almond butter! And you’re right–almond butter takes a whole different level of patience, but it’s soooo worth it!

So glad you posted this! My brother loves almond butter, so I’m going to make some for him as a Christmas present. I’ve been looking for a super simple recipe. Thanks!

I don’t usually make my own nut butters…. The noise the food processor makes when it grinds the nuts really grates on my nerves…

I need to make my own again sometime. I ruined a food processor making peanut butter before, but I’m pretty sure my heavy duty one can handle it haha.

I have never made my own because I feel like it’s not THAT much of a cost savings…..and becaues I’m kind of lazy. Mostly for money though. lol.

I want to make my own hummus sometime as well.

I could never get it to work in my food processor. I was always afraid that it would kill the motor. I always ended up with almond meal. Though, I now have a Vitamix, I should try it in there.

So true about the patience! I get out a pair of large headphones, a book, and a chair, and I’m good to go;) Yours looks like it came out perfect!

That’s a pretty awesome idea. Not exactly sure if my processor can take it…but I’m feeling lucky!

I wish more people made their own nut butters because the stuff most people buy in the grocery store is just repulsive!

I do make my own almond butter– I’ll add the link. Almonds are so hard that I have to be careful making almond butter even in the Vitamix, but I’ve done it lots of times and I’ve got the routine down. With the Vitamix it only takes a couple of minutes. I also make walnut butter– walnuts are so soft by comparison that it’s a cinch! Plus, when do you ever see walnut butter in the store? You kind of have to make it yourself. It’s good stuff.
