How Often Do You Go Out To Lunch?

by Matt on December 6, 2012

One of the things I’ve been working on lately is eating out less.

At my old job, I worked out 10 minutes from home, so I went home for lunch 95% of the time. I never had to worry about packing a lunch. Life was good.

Unfortunately, I don’t have that luxury anymore. This might sound whiny, but it’s a pain in the butt to pack a lunch every day. Something always seems to happen…

1. I forget to pack it
2. I don’t know what to make
3. I pack it, but leave it at home
4. I pack it, bring it, but don’t want it

Yep, I have lunch issues.

Yesterday, I had absolutely no desire to eat my sandwich and fixin’s, which is what I pretty much have every day, so
I decided to go out!

Chicken tacos beats a turkey sandwich right?

I think its great to go out every once and awhile, but I’m going to try and keep it down to once a week. All of those meals add up and it gets expensive! I’m also the type of person that like to know what actually goes into my food (most of the time).

I’m also going to try and pack more of a variety for lunch instead of having the same thing every day. I’m in a rut because I can make a peanut butter and jelly or turkey and cheese sandwich in two minutes, throw in some fruit and chips, and call it a day.

Please send me some packed lunch ideas if you have any!

How often do you go out for lunch vs brown bagging it?

I never go out for lunch. I’m a teacher, though, and when you have to eat with a very restricted time period, and often have students that want to come visit for help on their homework, eating out is not an option. Anyways, I did a post about what I do to make bringing lunch easy, healthy and versatile. I never get sick of it–but the base is always a salad–and I adore salads. http://eatmovebalance.com/prepping-lunches-for-the-week/

Eating out is my big downfall. My boyfriend and I are foodies and there are SO MANY amazing restaurants in Portland. We go out to dinner frequently–I try to limit it to once a week. As for lunch, I almost never go out to lunch during the workweek. I work downtown (near said amazing restaurants and food carts) but I like to bring my lunch. Saves money and calories!

I dine out at lunch maybe once or twice a month – it makes it more of a treat! PS – I don’t consider the salad bar in the cafeteria dining out – I’d get that and soup much more regularly.

I wish I could help, but I’m the epitome of lunch rut-ness. The PB&J or turkey/cheese? Welcome to my life  I keep saying that I want to switch things up, but I’m never really in the mood to put in the extra effort. You could just make more at dinner and bring leftovers the next day.

I either eat lunch at home or I bring something to class – I’m too cheap to buy lunch most of the time! Leftovers are always a good lunch option if you don’t feel like a sandwich.

Lately I’ve just been bringing lunchmeat sandwiches or PBJ, but over the summer I packed a lot of salads. I tried to get creative with the different toppings and it was honestly pretty fun.

Hi Matt, my husband almost always brings/makes his own work lunch. He has to walk a long way to and from the bus so he doesn’t want to bring in a whole lot of supplies all the way from home. He usually stocks up at the Whole Foods near his work on some of their less expensive options: canned beans, lettuce, whatever fruit is on sale. He often has a salad with beans on it and a simple salad dressing, plus fruit.

I work strange hours. I go into work at 3:30am and work until 11:30 am. I work part time so I bring my breakfast with me to work, because I dont want to spend the extra money and I also like to eat Cereal for breakfast!

I pack a lunch every day. I love going out to eat but I save that for the weekends in order to save money and stay healthy! I almost always pack leftovers from the night before…I couldn’t tell you the last time I packed a sandwich! Tonight I had lentil veggie mac and cheese so when I served myself I just put some in a tupperware for tomorrow. When I’m too lazy to do it the night before, it almost always makes me late in the morning. Oops! If all else fails, I take an Amy’s burritos and some fruit/random snacks!

I don’t eat lunch out because I’m stuck at home all day.
But I see where you’re coming from with packing a lunch. I never know what i want for lunch until I step into the kitchen.

Hmmm, I’m not sure what you’re restrictions are, but tuna salad, leftover crock pot meals, salads with chicken, yogurt and granola, peanut butter granola bars, hard-boiled eggs, leftover pizza, peanut butter granola bars (did I say that?)…. ;-)

I love packing wraps for lunch because they are so easy (and good!) I buy sprouted tortillas and add hummus, veggies, and whatever protein is on hand. I also make two at a time (one for the next day, too). That guacamole with those tacos looks amazing, though!:)

Ah, going out to lunch. When I worked in an office I went out a lot. It was an escape from the office after all. Now that I am at home, it’s easier to eat lunch here (helps that it’s when H naps, so I have to be here). I must admit, working in an office makes it tough, though. Maybe create something delicious on Sunday to pack throughout the week to get you excited about it??
