My New Routine

by Matt on August 2, 2012

With any new job (or major life change), there comes a new routine.

I hate to admit it, but I had it made at my old job. I had a 10 minute commute that allowed me to come home for lunch everyday. Ten minutes from door to desk is pretty convenient!

Now, my commute is about 40 minutes on a normal day, which really isn’t too bad. I leave at the same time since I work from 8:30-5:00 instead of 8:00-5:00, so my mornings haven’t required too much adjustment.

Here’s the low down on a typical day:

4:55 AM: Wake up

photo

5:20-6:45 AM: Workout

6:50-7:10 AM: Get ready while watching the news

7:10-7:40 AM: Breakfast + emails + social media and blog reading

7:40-8:30 AM: Drive to work (in style of course)

8:30-12:30: Work

12:30-1:00 PM: Lunch

It’s been a challenge to pack something interesting for lunch everyday and I’ve only packed it four times. Hmm…

Ideas?

I was also told that I have a “childs” lunchbox. If someone has an “adult” suggestion, please let me know! My peanut butter and jelly sandwich today probably didn’t help my cause.

1:00-5:00 PM: Work

5:00-5:45 PM: Drive home

5:45-6:20 PM: Computer + snack time

6:30-7:30 or 8:00 PM: Tennis

8:00-9:30 PM: Dinner + TV + computer

9:30-4:55 AM: SLEEP

So that’s my day in a nutshell! On a typical day of course…

Now, it’s tennis time :)

What does your typical day look like? Do we have any similarities?

I miss playing tennis! btw, that is not a child’s lunch bag. If it’s not spiderman plastic box, you’re ok. It just needs to be practical and serve it’s purpose. =)

What a cool post! I love reading about other people’s routines. I’m just starting a new chapter in my life (my internship), so I am still feeling out the routine. I can tell right now though that I will start having to get up at 5AM too if I want to make it to work on time!

Well, we have the same computer. That’s pretty much it. I cannot imagine getting up at 4:55! I get up at 7:15.

Hey Matt how did you get the pin it button at the top of your posts? What plugin is that?

My day is really similar, but it starts and ends later. :)

Work meals are a challenge – especially when I have to pack at least 3 meals now! I try to always have dinner leftovers, or have prepped a couple of intereting dishes on Sunday (quinoas, tuna burgers, etc) and keep veggies pre-cut in the fridge. I also pack my bag the night before so I’m not in a panicked rush in the morning.

Well, I don’t wake up until around 8:30 – so definitely a bit of a difference in our routines there! Well, that and the I-don’t-have-a-job-thing.

But, I do go workout right when I wake up, so there’s that. :-)

My routine used to look very similar when I was at my old job. I had to pack my lunch everyday too, and I did get tired of it after a while! It’s hard to think of new ideas that don’t cost a fortune, but I’m sure you’ll get creative ideas from other bloggers!

I keep updating the site to see if somebody already posted a suggestion to the lunch-packing-”problem.” I’ll have to pack my lunch every day beginning next month and I’m in desperate need for suggestions.

I just graduated with my master’s degree and accepted my first full time job. It will take me less than 10 minutes to drive to it–I’m so excited!

I’m always so impressed by all these bloggers who share their routines and say they wake up so early. I don’t think I’ll ever be one of those people! I think I’m more of a “type B” personality. Way to go, though! And congratulations on the new job!

Lately my wake up call time has been about the same. It’s been an adjustment taking on the early morning work shifts but I kinda like it because it frees up the rest of the day. I am very lucky to be close to both school and work so I am able to come home for lunch. I feel for you having to pack a lunch every day. I would try and prepare larger amounts of dinner so I could take leftovers the next day, or get creative with different sandwich options. That would be easy enough to switch up a lot so you don’t get too bored.

we pretty much have the same lunchbag. I bring the same thing every day until I get sick of it and then I change it. right now i’m eating a chicken breast, a veggie, applesauce, kombucha and almonds. i don’t know if i’ll ever get sick of this!!!

no more freddie mac eh? are you out of that field altogether?

I really wish I woke up as early as you to workout! I have been having the hardest time waking up in the mornings. I only like 5 minutes away from my job, but I also live in a small town. I rarely go home for lunch though because we are usually to busy to leave so I pack my lunch.

What a day! I love how organized it is – and I’m glad to hear the adjustments to your schedule have been minor. That’s great! Change can be hard – especially when its drastic.

The first thing I thought when I saw the picture of your car was, “But that that makes the commute better.”

As for the “child” lunchbox, I want to see a picture. If you really want to change it, I’d look up stuff on Amazon, and maybe look into bento-style boxes.
