Nothing To Yolk About

by Matt on March 15, 2012

Is it me or are egg whites popping up on blogs like whoa?

For some reason, it seems like a lot of people are concerned with the egg yolk because of the fat and cholesterol associated with it.

I’ve done the whole “low-fat, high protein” thing, but it didn’t work for me. It was tasteless and completely unsatisfying.

It’s supposed to be the incredible, edible egg, not egg white.

The egg yolk makes up about 33% of the weight of an egg and contains about 50-60 calories depending upon the egg size.

  • Egg yolks contain 18 different amino acids which are necessary for healthy human growth.
  • Egg yolks also contain most of the egg’s calcium, iron, and zinc.
  • Egg yolks are rich in vitamin A, D, and E which are important for healthy eyes and bones, as well as other essential human functions.

A few days ago, I received a few local products from Greenling DFW delivered right to my door!

Greenling is a service that provides delivery for organic, local groceries and produce.

I was the most excited about receiving a dozen fresh, local, organic eggs.

Is it me or are farm fresh eggs one of the best things in the world?

I don’t think I can go back to regualr eggs after having these!

As soon as I received them, I made a few sunny side up eggs to have for lunch.

Unless my eggs are scrambled, it’s essential for the yolk to be runny. I dry yolk is so unappetizing to me for some reason!

As most of you know, an egg sandwich is one of my favorite meals.

Eggs keep me full and satisfied due to the combination of fat and protein. When you add in some carbs (from bread, rice, quinoa, ect…) and a vegetable side dish, you have a complete, satisfying meal!

Yolk or white? What do you prefer?

I am so glad you posted this – I think the whole egg is the way to go (unless you have a health condition). And farm fresh eggs are the single best breakfast item I’ve ever had… that alone is why I probably won’t make it vegan past this month’s challenge. And cheese, of course. :)

Whole egg hands down. I hate recipes that call for whites because I always feel bad about wasting the yolk and I refuse to buy those nasty cartons of egg whites. They just completely gross me out.

for years I wouldn’t eat an egg yolk because of the fat thing.. but that was back in the dark ages when we thought all fats were bad.

I still do buy cartons of egg whites and use them for some things but right now I am off to cook eggs for our breakfast! Love the taste of whole eggs.

Farm fresh eggs really are SO amazing. My daughter and I went to the farm once and gathered them ourselves. Eight bucks a dozen. YIKES! I also just signed up for a monthly farm delivery, first one tomorrow. Can’t wait.

With you on the yolk! Sometimes I’ll mix whites with eggs, but for the most part– I want the whole thing!

I definitely like the yolk, but I love the whites to put in recipes. If I’m having an egg sandwich or scrambled eggs, I neeed the yolk. If they’re going in pancakes, or other recipes, then the whites are the way to go.

I like yolk, but like you ONLY if they’re runny. If they’re hard and dry… I just don’t eat them!

I’m love all of the egg! I’ve been known to eat far too many of them in a day – I’d eat them for every meal! I don’t mind a hard yolk, but do prefer them runny as well.

100% pro egg! An egg sandwich is one of my favorite things, too: The perfect Saturday lunch, with a thick slice of tomato and some greens on rye bread. I wish it were Saturday right now!

I prefer the whole egg. Other people can say all the harmful content of the yolk, but then again, anything consumed in moderation is not bad for us.

Whole eggs for sure! especially if they are free range or organic. If you throw out the yolk you lose all those essential vitamins. The yolk is also very rich in choline, a B vitamin which forms part of our cells and is important in brain function as well as liver detox. So much goodness in such a small package!

I prefer a whole egg, but a lot of the time I go with one whole egg mixed with 1/4 cup of egg whites. I agree with the runny egg yolk, I dry egg yolk is the worst!

How I wish I could have farm fresh eggs right now instead of the grocery store ones I buy…they’re fine but just me leave me a bit wary.
I agree that the egg yolk is part of the reason to eat an egg, though I personally prefer the white. It’s a matter of taste more than anything else, yolks just taste funny to me!

Growing up, whenever I ate eggs, I had stomach pain and nausea afterward. I tried egg whites eventually and did not have the symptoms! So I typically stick to egg whites. However, on occasion I enjoy a whole egg with a nice runny yolk. If I eat the whole egg, I cannot do it scrambled, a runny yolk simply MUST be involved. Sometimes my stomach hurts afterward and sometimes it doesn’t! I’m not sure what causes it.

I only eat egg whites sometimes because they come in a convenent carton and I don’t have to crack them open. But when I use whole eggs I always eat the yolk, don’t want to waste all that nutrition!

The yolk is my favorite part of the egg. I get that everyone eats differently, but the nutrients offset the extra calories for me so I cringe when I hear my friends say that they throw yolks away.
