Running Is More Than A Workout. It’s A Way Of Life.

by Matt on August 20, 2012

I haven’t been writing about running much lately, but I sure as hell have been doing it.

I’ve run at 5 AM, but I’ve also run at 5 PM. I’ve run on the road, the trails, and the treadmill. I’ve run in the sun and the rain. However, I’ve only run in the heat.

I also purchased some new running gear :)

Life has been busy. Work has been taking up a lot of time, but I’ve also been very involved with tennis while trying to maintain a social life with my friends and family. I love everything that I’ve been doing and I wouldn’t change my schedule for anything. I love being busy, but it forces me to adopt the mentality of “just keep on moving.”

No matter how busy my life gets, I always find time to run. Always. Most days, I wake up at 4:55 AM to get it in, but I do get to enjoy a mid-morning run on the weekends. You always make time for what’s important in life right? What can I say, it’s a way of life. It’s my routine.

Here’s a few reasons WHY it’s a way of life for me:

  • Running proves to myself that I’m strong and capable, physically and mentally. Every time I finish a long run or a tough speed workout, I feel accomplished because I know that I’m doing something that very few people are capable of doing.
  • I know I’m staying healthy!
  • Other runners inspire me. We’re a community of insane, like-minded people with the same goal: Keep running at all costs. Injury? No big deal. Waking up the butt crack of dawn every day? Piece of cake.
  • It provides balance in my life. Whether it’s to prepare or unwind, running always helps me relax, focus, and of course, entertained.
This is why my dad’s first question to me every day is “How was your run this morning?” Yeah, it’s a given.

What’s something that’s a way of life for you that might be hard for someone else to understand?

I envy your dedication to running, especially in this crazy Texas heat!! I am literally a fair weather runner. I like to do it in the Spring and Fall but other the other seasons I stick to other stuff. I wish I more more like you!!

Your running amazes me – I struggle through 3 runs per week, at a way lower mileage, but I definitely get the “runners high” after I’m done – knowing I’ve completed something that’s so good for me mentally and physically.

I love how dedicating you are to running! 5am is early! I think it’s important to have something that you’re passionate about.
I workout 6 days a week and I have a set schedule each day. If it gets messed up, I feel kind of off, and I dont think everyone understands that.

I love running – I only do it 3 times a week or so (otherwise my knees would hate me) and I would never even thinking about waking up at 5 am to get a run in, I do look forward to it. After focusing on heavy lifting for a while I’m starting to remember why running was my first fitness love.

I get that completely. If I don’t workout every day you don’t want to be around me – I’m a cranky biy-atch.

The same. Running. Though, right now, I do it with the aid of a machine that is somewhere between a treadmill and an elliptical that helps my joints. Though people may also be confused by my overwhelming love of books.

people don’t seem to understand my love for healthy eating. most of my co-workers come in every morning with mcdonalds, crack open a soda 20 minutes later, get a slushie from 7-11 during lunch and don’t think twice about it.

i ask them why they eat such garbage after I tell them how bad it is for them and their response is usually “because it tastes good”.

but apparently i’m the weird one. go figure!

i’m jealous of all the tennis you’ve been playing. i haven’t played in a year. :( my friends are lazy.

What a great post! I think fitness in general is a way of life for me. I do it because I love it, so of course I am going to make time for it!
