A New Kind Of Nut Butter

by Matt on March 3, 2011

As we all know, I am serious about my nut butter.

Recently, I was sent a jar of SunButter Natural Omega 3 to review!

Can you think of anyone more qualified for the job?

I’ve never tried SunButter before, so let’s hear my thoughts on it…

Taste: Sunbutter serves up a strong aroma of roasted nuts as soon as you open the jar. To me, it tasted like a sweeter version of peanut butter. It had that rich, roasted taste that I absolutely love.

Texture: The texture is very similar to natural peanut butter. After a quick stir, it was still a little runny and spreadable. Perfect for toast (or eating wit a spoon).

Price: SunButter is pretty expensive, which is one of the reasons why I have never purchased it. Will I buy it in the future? I have no idea.

Ingredients and Nutrition:

SunButter® Natural Omega-3 Nutrition Info

Sunflower Seed, Flaxseed, Dehydrated Cane Juice, Salt, and Natural Mixed Tocopherols to preserve freshness.

The nutritional information is quite similar to most other nut butters, but it does have an extra gram of protein and fiber. It has 4 grams of sugar from the dehydrated cane juice, but that’s not an issue for me.

To me, the highlight was the 461 mg of omega-3’s.

Overall: I thought it was a great product and I really enjoyed it. If you have a peanut allergy, this certainly is a great replacement! It will never be a peanut butter replacement for me, but I will definitely finish off this jar with a smile on my face. If I can it cheap somewhere, I would definitely buy it.

Have you tried SunButter? What were your thoughts?

*SunButter provided me with a free sample of this product to review, and I was under no obligation to review it if I so chose. Nor was I under any obligation to write a positive review  in return for the free product.*

——————————————————————————-

Since my bike is in the shop getting a tune up, I decided on a run/swim combo this morning. I’m hoping it’s ready this afternoon!

Thursday Workout

Running: 8.13 miles (all barefoot)

Swimming: 3000 yds

The worst part about swimming in the AM is that I feel like I am going to work. Literally, I am at work. I swim at the same pool that I work at, so it’s actually really weird to be there and not actually “working.”

The perk is that I know everyone and there isn’t any of that awkward “hey he is half naked” kind of stuff ;)

Since the pool doesn’t open until 6:00 AM, I decided to run there and kill some time (remember that I am a nutcase and I wake up around 5:00). To stick with my goal of being able to comfortably run 10 miles barefoot by graduation, I slipped on my Vibrams and I was off.

Everything went really well, but my legs are definitely going to be sore tomorrow! I think it will be a cross training day! I think I am actually due for one of those…

And me weekend has officially started. Yay for not having class on Fridays :)

What are you up to this weekend?

I’ve never tried SunButter, but I DID just purchase my first jar of sunflower seed butter (I forget the brand, I think something local because it came from a farm stand) – I can’t wait to try it! And I thought of you when I bought it. I definitely trust your palate when it comes to nut butter :)

Love SunButter. I keep it turned upside down so I don’t have to stir it each time I open it up.

Glad to hear that you enjoyed it and I agree with you it is expensive but I got it on sale so I did not feel bad about buying it.

Thoughts on making it at home on your own? Similar to other nut butters?

BTW – I am a crunchy guy so my SunButter was crunchy and for me that added to the flavor when I had my daily afternoon SB&J sandwich.

I haven’t tried sunbutter either! I may have to give it a shot.

But there will definitely never be a substitute for peanut butter. ;-)

sunflower seed butter is my favorite kind of nut (er, seed?) butter!! I love how drizzly and smooth it is, and of course the taste.

I went through a major Sunbutter phase a while back and loved its sweet but unique taste. I had no idea that they make an omega-3 version though. Very cool.

what do you do about oil on the top of nut butters? Everytime I buy Justin’s there’s a good one inch of it on the top. So do you recommend I just pour it in the sink, or stir it super good?

I really like Sunbutter! The consistency is perfect for drizzling over oatmeal or yogurt. Kind of reminds me of Barney Butter.

Hi Matt,
Thanks for the review. As a SunButter blogger, I so appreciate your honest eval. In case your dedicated blog followers want to know, there’s also an organic variety (only sunflower seeds, nothing else) and they just now have a new no-stir variation. As a fellow Triathlete (I use that term loosely in my case : ) I really enjoy your posts! Looking forward to following.

Yum. I’ve seen that and was wondering what it’s like. I don’t think it was any more expensive than most nut butters though?

Does it taste like regular Sunflower Seed Butter then??

it’s weird it’s expensive because sunflower seeds are cheap – if you had one of those vitamixes, and really liked this stuff I’d do that – but I’m with you, PB is really the best nut butter and almond butter too –
some really YUMMY looking creations up here lately – YUM- I cant make them though because I have zero self control!
