SunWarrior Raw Vegan Protein Review

by Matt on March 19, 2011

A week or two ago (time really flies!), I ordered some Sunwarrior Brown Rice Protein from Gina’s OpenSky Shop. She was having a killer deal on this stuff and I think the total was around $30 with free shipping. $30 may seem like a lot, but there is actually quite a bit in the package.

I’ve had a few people ask me about it, so I thought this would be perfect timing to get a review up!

You can find the product in her shop here.

Let’s face it, protein powder has the potential to taste terrible. I’ve tried some in the past that were pretty gag-worthy! Is that a word?

Honestly, I’m not huge on protein powders. I would rather get my protein from natural food sources like eggs, grass-fed beef, wild fish, Greek Yogurt, and nut butters (of course).

However, there are times when too many of these foods can make me feel weighed down or lethargic or they simply just have no appeal (especially after a hard workout when I have trouble stomaching food).

Does that happen to anyone else?

That is where protein powder really helps me out.

Another reason that protein powder is beneficial is that it helps me get some quick, easy to digest protein in my body after a workout when I am short on time. A smoothie with milk, fruit, and protein powder is something that I can carry with me to help me refuel.

I think my diet gets plenty of protein without it, but it really does help in the above scenarios.

Why brown rice protein?

  • Whole grain brown rice is naturally high in many of the B Vitamins, including B1 (thiamin), B2 (riboflavin), and B3 (niacin).
  • At 85% protein, Sunwarrior has the highest (non soy) raw (not heated over 90 degrees ) whole grain sprouted vegan protein on the market.
  • Naturally rich in vitamins and minerals, Sunwarrior Protein contains high amounts of antioxidants, tocopherols, and tocotrienols and other essential nutrients such as thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, phosphorous, iron and potassium.
  • Sunwarrior uses an old world process of combining the sprouted endosperm and the bran from raw sprouted whole grain brown rice. This unique process creates the first complete hypoallergenic protein which is made up of all 9 essential amino acids and other non-essential amino acids in a perfectly balanced amino acid profile.
  • Not only is it loaded with vitamins and minerals, it also takes great. How can that be bad?

I’ve actually never tried it straight up with water, but I have added it to smoothies, pancakes, and oatmeal. It is freaking delicious.

All of the other brown rice protein powders that I’ve tried in the past have been kind of tangy and chalky, which I am not a fan of. Sunwarrior has a nice, smooth flavor that I really enjoy.

Have you tried SunWarrior Brown Rice Protein? What did you think?

What is the nutritional breakdown of this delicious looking smoothie? I typically don’t us protein powders either so I am wondering if incorporating this into my diet would make sense.

I’ve only tried vega, but sun warrior would be my second choice vs. any animal protein powder. Thanks for the review!

I have not tried Sun Warrior although I’ve heard it is wonderful — mixes well and tastes good.

I like my 100% whey — even though most dairy does not agree with me, this stuff does!

Hey! Well… haven’t tried brown rice protein powder, but after reading the research, I’m a PRO whey protein kind of girl for helping to heal the muscles, refuel glycogen stores, and build more muscle ;)

I have actually been wondering about Sunwarrior. I think chocolate protein powder seriously is gagworthy and I cannot stomach that to save my life. I love vanilla protein powders though. Yummy.

At first I thought Sun Warrior tasted really chalky, but I realized if I pair it with the right things, it’s great and definitely helps keep me full in smoothies!! Yours sounds so good, I’ll have to give it a try!

Thanks for the review! I’ve been really curious about trying Sun Warrior since I’m about out of what I thought was my never-ending supply of protein powder. I’m really picky when it comes to protein powders, which is odd since I’m not at all a picky eater…I think it’s from working at GNC while going to college and trying pretty much every kind we sold. There are some real losers out there! Ick!

I love making chocolate PB banana protein smoothies…like having a reese’s cup! Yum!

Hurrah! Thanks for reviewing this! You’ve probably convinced me. There are times indeed when I just “need” a smoothie, because I either can’t stomach food (post-workout), or am obscenely lazy/busy ;) Two questions: about how much is in a serving, and does it thicken smoothies nicely?

So glad you did this post! Thanks again for the blog-lovin’ yesterday ;)

I usually use 30 grams, which is one scoop. It’s 24 grams of protein and I think 110 calories.

Sun Warrior is by far my favorite vegan protein powder on the market. I’ve never tried the chocolate flavor, but I absolutely love the vanilla. I hate all the other brown rice and vegan protein powders, such as Nutribiotic, etc. I do agree with you, though, that I’d rather get my protein from real and natural foods, but that’s not always the case.

Love your smoothie combination- all my favorites into one! I bet strawberries would be yummy in it, too!

Haven’t tried this one yet but I would love to! I wish that all protein powders came in SAMPLE sizes… I am not willing to buy 1 pound TUBS of these powders if I am not going to like them! I am however obsessed with Olympian Labs Vanilla Pea Protein right now! :)
