Taking It Outside

by Matt on August 28, 2012

Call me crazy, but I love the dark mornings that the fall weather brings

One of my favorite aspects about the Fall season is that I can watch the sunrise. It’s so peaceful and makes me cherish every step.

I’ll be the first one to admit that I ran inside quite a bit this summer to try and evade the heat as much as possible. Hey, I’m human and I only have so much sweat to excrete from my pores.

I’ll also admit that the treadmill is way too convenient. The clock is right there in front of me and it’s easier to push myself because it only takes the tap of a button to increase the speed and incline

But nothing beats an outdoor workout, especially when the conditions are ideal. It also forces me to finish the workout I have planned. I can’t just turn off the machine and call it quits early. I have to get back somehow right

I get myself in this rut year after year during the summer months. However, once Fall arrives and I start running outside again, I fall in love with the sport all over again

This morning, I ran outside and loved every second of it.

I’m one of those people that has to have a goal for everything. My brain constantly has to be processing something because it doesn’t have an off switch. I wish I was one of those people that could just go out there and “run” without any set expectations. That’s not me

This morning, I came up with a workout on the fly that I really enjoyed!

Do you ever get in a treadmill rut?

What is your favorite running season?

I only like running on the treadmill if I am doing intervals otherwise it bores me to tears and I find myself constantly looking at the time.

I LOVE running in the Fall!! There is just something about it that makes me happy. Plus, the temps seem to make Fall runs so much easier than Summer/Winter. Running in the Spring is nice, too!!

I agree with you on both accounts – fall running is the best and also that I have to have some sort of running plan in my head. I can’t really run just to run either.

I’m with ya, I definitely have to have goals for every run…whether the goal is to chill or intervals or a certain time goal, have to have ‘em! :) Love your running interval workouts you post! I’ve saved several & use them in my rotations :) Thank you for posting them!!!

I love running outside! It clears my mind. If I run on a treadmill I just constantly stare at the clock. I do my best thinking when I run outside!

I have a tempo run tomorrow. I am going to do the one you just wrote! I was wondering why you never do any races? I know you would do well. I’ve been following you for prob a couple yrs and I’ve never read you race much. You train for it, why not? Just curious. :)

I don’t love the treadmill, but I started running on it so I became very used to it. As long as I’m doing intervals of some sort, I’m good.

And I definitely need some sort of running goal/plan when I run – apparently, I’m a planner.

I can’t a stand to stay on the treadmill very long. Plus, I always found I was slower… do you notice a difference? Used to love night runs in the late summer when there was just a little bit of fall creeping in.

I’m in a serious treadmill rut right now. I didn’t do much running over the summer and I know my endurance has suffered because of it. I’m loving the treadmill because if I overestimate my endurance level, I’m not stuck in the middle of a trail, I can hit the button and hop off. But I am trying to take more of my workouts outside as the weather begins to cool off some.

I love being outside! I can definitely kick a workout early in the gym, but a on a long walk or run, you’re right that you’ve got to get home! I’m doggysitting in France at the moment and now I have no excuses but to get some good long walks in every day and I love it!

i definitely would prefer running in the fall. love the foliage and the cooler temps. there aren’t many outdoor places I can run around here unfortunately so i’m stuck with the treadmill. that will change soon.

I sometimes get into a treadmill rut, and I start crosstraining more to help me get out of it. This summer was terrible because of the heat so I couldn’t run outside as much. I love Fall weather! :)

Wow, gorgeous photo! Fall is my fav workout season – especially crisp fall mornings. I’m eager for a crisp (no cold!) morning run.

Yes! I usually run on the treadmill in the summer and winter. I hate the cold and the hot weather. But I love running outside in the fall.
I think having a goal definitely makes you push yourself harder!
