Whole30

by Matt on February 8, 2013

This Sunday, I’m starting the Whole30 program!

20130208-093939.jpg

The Whole30 program is to eat strict Paleo for 30 days. No sneaks or cheats. The plan allows for vegetables, fruits, nuts, eggs, meat, seafood, and seeds. The plan forbids grains, sugar, sweeteners, alcohol, legumes, dairy, and seed oils. It’s going to be tough!

The food you eat either makes you more healthy or less healthy. Those are your food options.

It’s hard to explain why I’m doing this, but it’s something that I really want to complete. Lately, I’ve lost touch with my day to day diet. I’ve been eating too much cheese, processed grains, and not nearly enough fresh fruit and vegetables. This isn’t the way I like to eat. I like to eat whole foods that make me feel good.

I’m hoping that this program will get me back on track. It will force me buy food that doesn’t come in a package, meal plan, and really enjoy food, rather than just eating it because it’s there.

I don’t plan on going Paleo for the rest of my life. Hell, I’ll probably have a yogurt on day 31! I guess we’ll see how I’m feeling after this challenge is over and decide what’s best for me.

My main goal for the challenge is to find what works best for ME.It will give me a clean slate to reintroduce foods one a time.

I know this is going to be tough, but I have no doubts that I won’t be able to do it. Hey, it might even be fun :)

I’m on the fence about blogging recaps throughout the challenge. Would anyone be interested? Do you want to see a daily post of meals, occasional recipes, or…?

Just let me know!

I’d *definitely* love to see some recipes – and maybe the occasional (weekly?) recaps. I’m really interested to see how different people react to this way of eating, and I’m hopin that one day I can afford to do it myself (student budget doesn’t allow for it).

Good luck!

I would definitely be interested in reading about your progress/thoughts through the month. As someone who has dabbled in the paleo diet, have close friends that eat paleo, and actually agree with most of it’s guidelines, I’m always curious to hear about how people like it. I don’t think I’d ever go strictly paleo, but a lot of my meals turn out that way. However, I’m okay with keeping other whole foods in my diet, such as legumes and a few whole grains. But that’s just me . . . and as I always say . . . there’s no one diet that works for everyone–we are all unique and just need to find what suits us the best! :)

I bet you’re going to feel fabulous but I bet it’s seriously hard!

I’m pretty sure I could never follow a Paleo diet given my love of yogurt and cereal, but I always like hearing about people’s experiences with diet experiments, so some recaps would be cool. A few daily eats and how you’re feeling, maybe?

I would enjoy recaps, though maybe just like when you feel inspired to post something, which might not be every day!

Good luck with this, I’m sure you’ll feel great throughout the month, although I’m heard the first week or two can be rough in terms of energy levels.

I don’t see any reason to take healthy foods like legumes or most whole grains out of a diet, and I’m largely vegetarian so I’m certainly no paleo. But getting rid of sugar, white flour, and refined oils and adding fruits and vegetables could only help nutritionally. Plus all the restrictions pretty much force you to cook from scratch, which is usually a good thing.

I think this is great. I did something similar when I made the switch to eating vegan. I was a vegetarian, and while I ate plenty of fruits and veggies I was eating wayyy too much cheese and packaged goodies. I went vegan for 30 days to force me to read EVERY single thing I ate, and I was hooked. Who knows, you may just LOVE this next 30 days!! I bet you will feel better all around!

Just found your blog, and read through all your update posts so far! So interested in this. I definitely want to try it at some point – being a college student makes it difficult to try things like this, especially cause I have an on-campus meal plan (bleh), but I want to try the paleo thing. Especially if it means I can eat my paleo almond banana bread all day…it’s linked below :) So excited to keep up with your progress!
