Ok, here’s the situation:
You’ve put in the hard work, you’re well trained, and a nagging injury suddenly pops up. For any runner, this is probably the most the devestating thing that can happen.

If you’ve ever been to a sports medicine doctor, I’m sure you know that it can take FOREVER to get an appointment.
Furthermore, it’s important to go to a sports medicine doctor that specializes in your sport. Since I’m a runner, I prefer to go to a doctor that also runs. I know this doctor is going to understand my passion for getting back on the roads as quickly as possible, but will also have an extensive understanding of running related injuries. Been there, done that right?
Have you ever experienced the headache of finding the right doctor that alos excepts your insurance?
Enter ZocDoc, a service that allows you to research, read reviews, and see the doctors’ availability before booking an appointment. You can even book an appointment online (or through your iPhone)!
Users are able to search for doctors in a variety of specialties:
- Dentist
- Primary care
- Dermatologist
- Eye-specialist
- ENT
- Orthopedist
- OB/GYN
- Allergist
- Podiatrist
- Cardiologist
- Pediatrician
- Radiologist
- Psychiatrist
Once you’ve determined what sort of specialist you’re looking for, you can filter the results by including the insurance you have.
Once you find a doctor that is located in your insurance network, you can view the doctors and their first available appointment.
By selecting a doctor, you can view additional information, like their education and prior experience.

I didn’t actually use this app to book an appointment with a sports medicine doctor (since I’m not injured), but I did use it to book an appointment for a physical last week.
Since I just moved here a few months ago, I wanted to find a doctor in my area that took my insurance and had positive recommendations.
I found the app fairly easy to use and everything was pretty straight forward. I searched for primary care physicians in my area that take my inusrance. After reading through the reviews, I selected a doctor that had an available appointment at a time that worked for me. I showed up, waited (it’s impossible to go to any doctor without waiting!), went through my physical, and headed home. It was pretty easy with no complications!
The app also lets you view future and past appointments and makes it very easy for your to leave feedback about your visit with that doctor.
Unfortunately, the service is limited to people in New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Dallas, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Houston.
Be sure to check out the Facebook page!

That’s super helpful! I’m sure I’ll be needing that.
I needed this on Monday when I woke up with a sore throat. I don’t have a regular Dr. so I sat in the Minor Emergency for 1.5 hours. Yuck.

Ah man, this would have been SO helpful last year when I had my hip fractures. It took a lot of phone tag to find an orthopedist who accepted my insurance. Thanks so much for the info!

This was just what I was looking for! My insurance company has something similar but it is so hard to use. I just made a dentist appointment that I have been procrastinating forever!

This sounds like such an awesome app! Seriously impressive that they have all the info on these doctors from so many specialties and list them by insurance. I would totally use this if they had it for Madison!

That’s not in my area, but it sure is interesting.

While I am already a well-established patient with a sports medicine doctor (unfortunately), this app seems extremely useful. I spent what seemed like an eternity trying to find another type of doctor the other day. Between insurance and locations, my head was spinning!
